Student / Research Assistant (m/f/d)

The research groups at the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing investigate the mechanisms that govern animal health and lifespan using the turquoise killifish (Notobranchius furzeri). We apply a multidisciplinary approach, combining genetics, evolutionary biology, systems biology, cell and molecular biology, imaging, biochemistry, and mass spectrometry to better understand the biology of ageing and age-related diseases.

Research environment

Founded in 2008, the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing aims to uncover the fundamental mechanisms of healthy ageing. It is part of a large network of research institutions in the Cologne-Bonn area, all dedicated to ageing and age-related diseases, creating a vibrant and collaborative research environment. The institute is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies and excellent core facilities, which will be accessible to the successful candidate. The Institute currently hosts up to 350 employees from 30 countries.

We are looking for a motivated student to assist with feeding the fish on weekends and holidays, as well as performing general strain maintenance tasks in our fish facility (approximately 7-20h/week). The successful candidate will receive the necessary training to perform these tasks.

The student´s primary tasks will include:

  • Feeding fish
  • Hatching and collecting live fish food (Artemia)
  • Removing dead fish and preserving them for genetic analyses
  • Monitoring water filtration system parameters
  • Rinsing fish tanks, loading and unloading the dishwashers
  • Keeping track of all the daily tasks on a log
  • Interactions with the fish facility manager, animal care takers and scientists

Your profile

The candidate must be enrolled at a German university (preferably in Biology or a related field). A reliable and responsible attitude toward animal care and lab maintenance is essential.
