Research meets the public in Cologne

May 21, 2026

Science belongs in society - and sometimes it belongs in a pub too. At this year’s ‘Pint of Science’ event in Cologne, researchers once again left the laboratory and headed to Cologne’s pubs to present their work to a curious audience.

Throughout the evening, scientists presented current research topics in a relaxed atmosphere, made complex ideas accessible and invited open discussion. The audience was enthusiastic, asking thoughtful questions and offering perspectives that highlighted the value of direct dialogue between researchers and the public.

Pint of Science is an international initiative that aims to bring science to places where people already gather, thereby lowering the barrier to participation and fostering conversations outside academic settings. The event in Cologne demonstrated just how well this approach works: the pub was packed, discussions continued long after the talks had finished, and the exchange was lively, respectful and characterised by genuine curiosity.

We would like to thank all the speakers for sharing their research findings so openly, the organising team who made the event possible, and everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion. Events such as ‘Pint of Science’ demonstrate how meaningful and enriching public engagement can be, for both researchers and the audience.
