The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing strictly applies an active policy of hiring the best scientists in general, and outstanding female and international candidates in particular, hence creating a fairer and more inclusive work environment.
The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing is strongly committed to provide an inclusive, family-friendly and internationally diverse work environment. At the institute, female scientists are strongly represented across the board – from PhD to Directorship level. The institute takes an active role in supporting all staff members who have children and strives to make work and family life compatible.
For example, the institute has flexible working hours and offers part-time options to staff members who have children. Furthermore, the MPI for Biology of Ageing has a dedicated family room that provides additional flexibility to parents who may need to stay on-site while fulfilling family duties. The institute has cooperation with multiple childcare centres providing places in nearby day care institutions. The international office provides help to the staff members with children in choosing appropriate day care options. Importantly, the institute has a contract with PME Familienservice GmbH in order to help young scientists to overcome barriers they may face in regards to their work commitments. This service company is located in Cologne and offers back-up service for situations when childcare cover is either not sufficient or not available, e.g temporary closings of facilities or school holidays. All institute employees are eligible for this service and the MPG covers costs for up to 20 days per year and employee. The PME also provides assistance with finding day-care, nanny and baby sitter services for the employees.
The institute’s staff members also have access to a wealth of support activities available at the UoC’s Campus. For example, female scientists can take part in the UoC’s Cornelia Harte Mentoring Programme and have access to the regular Women in Science and Society seminar series. Moreover, the GSfBS (Graduate School for Biological Sciences) offers career advancement training aimed at female PhD Students who wish to pursue a career in academic research.
The institute has an Officer (Dusanka Milenkovic) and a Deputy Officer (Gabriella Lundkvist) for Gender Equality, who share the equal opportunity work at the institute. Among their tasks are to monitor and promote equal opportunities for women and men, participate in recruiting processes and participate in all relevant meetings and organizational matters, with the aim of eliminating existing and future discrimination related to an employee’s gender.
