Workshop: Intercultural communication skills for PhD candidates and postdocs

The Workshop is organised by the GADIS (Gender and Diversity in Science) Network from the CECAD Excellence Cluster for Aging Research, the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing and the SFB 1451.

In today’s ever more connected and globalized world, is it almost impossible not to have international interactions. Unfortunately, these interactions don’t always go as smoothly as we like them to be. Why is it so easy to misunderstand a person from another culture, and - most important - what can you do about it? In this training, we’ll take a self-test and we introduce a framework that can help you correctly interpret actions of your conversation partner. Culture shock and the impact of stereotyping and prejudices are also discussed. Our trainings are always very informal and interactive. Expect to actively engage in discussions and exercises.

What happens in our cells when they age? With increasing age, the efficiency of the body and thus of each individual cell decreases. Processes are slower and people are more susceptible to infections. But why is that and what exactly happens in our cells during this process? Dr. Lena Pernas explains how our cells defend themselves against infections. Prof. Vilchez shows us how the cells in our body keep order and that order in the cell is essential for longevity. Too much clutter restricts the cell in its function. So it has to be cleaned out every day.

The explanations of the two experts are embedded in an exhibition on aging by Steffi Sonntag at the VHS, which can be visited in this context.

Continuing Education Center of the City of Cologne
The VHS was founded in 1919 out of the university and became a municipal institution in 1920. Until its closure by the National Socialists in 1933, it was committed to democratic and humanistic ideas. After liberation from National Socialism, it resumed its work in this tradition in 1946. As a municipal center for continuing education in the city of Cologne, the VHS is part of the public service and, according to the NRW Continuing Education Act (WbG), a mandatory task of the municipality. With its diverse range of continuing education programs and qualified counseling, the VHS promotes lifelong learning and enables social participation as well as support in the sense of the elementary guiding principle of education policy work.

Healthy Ageing Conference

This conference will bring together scientists, clinicians and drug developers involved in research into ageing and other relevant fields. We will explore how recent developments in cell- and immune-senescence, neuroinflammation, stem cells and epigenetics are leading to an increased understanding of the ageing process.

This year’s meeting will also highlight research into the ageing brain and nervous system and discuss lifestyle interventions for health improvement.

We welcome abstracts from all areas relevant to the main themes of the meeting, for both oral and poster presentations. Several oral presentations will be chosen from the abstracts submitted. Abstract deadline is 29 March 2022.
