Max Planck Digest lecture series

Speaker: Dr. Niels Rattenborg (Max Planck Institute for Ornithology)
Organizer: Raymond Laboy (MPI for Biology of Ageing)

The Max Planck Digest lecture series aims to provide insights beyond ageing research and biology by allowing us to take a look at the research of other Max Planck institutes. All participants are encouraged to reflect and discuss their research in an interdisciplinary atmosphere. All members of the Max Planck Society and the University of Cologne are invited.

Niels Rattenborg from Max Planck Institute for Ornithology (Seewiesen) will talk about “Evolution and Function of Avian Sleep”.
The group of Niels Rattenborg studies sleep states of birds, that are neurophysiological and behavioural similar to mammalian rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep. Moreover, the group aims to investigate how birds sleep when faced with ecological circumstances that seemingly require sustained wakefulness. Doing so, they were able to show for the first time that birds can sleep in flight. More information about the research of the Rattenborg group.
