As part of the "World mitochondrial awareness week" from 18.9.22-24.9.22, attention is being drawn around the world to rare diseases based on mitochondrial dysfunction. Two Cologne scientists from the Collaborative Research Centre 1218 Regulation of Cellular Function by Mitochondria asked themselves what stories and stories of fate actually lie behind their field of research. Lilli Pazurek and Hae-Na Choi are doing their doctorates at the University of Cologne and spoke with Samuel and Alex, two young people who suffer from the mitochondrial hereditary disease LHON. In the mitochondrial disease LHON, a mutation leads to loss of vision in a very short time.

The Collaborative Research Centre "Mitochondrial Regulation of Cellular Functions”
Scientists from the University of Cologne, the Cluster of Excellence for Ageing Research CECAD, the Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, the Max Planck Institute for Metabolism Research and the University of Bonn are jointly investigating how mitochondria influence cell activity, differentiation and survival. Collaborative Research Centre 1218 " Regulation of cellular function by mitochondria" has been funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since July 2016. In July 2020, the SFB entered its second phase, which will be funded until 2024.
